My Life As a Dog Movie Review

film hallstrom awards foreign

This sweet little film is about a boy of 12 (Anton Glanzelius) who is sent to stay with relatives during his mother's illness. It's set in 1950s Sweden and is filled with colorful village characters and an irresistible tomboy with whom he tumbles into as much puppy love as he can handle at that age. The unexpected success of My Life As a Dog stunned exhibitors and woke up U.S. producers; Lasse Hallstrom was welcomed to Hollywood to make Once Around, What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, and Something to Talk About. AKA: Mitt Liv Som Hund.
