Young drifter Gere, who enters Navy Officer Candidate School because he doesn't know what else to do with his life, becomes a better person almost despite himself. Winger is the love interest who sets her sights on marrying Gere, and Gossett is the sergeant who whips him into shape. Strong performances by the whole cast made this a must-see in 1982 that is still appealing, despite the standard Hollywood premise.

Richard Gere plays Zack Mayo who is a young guy who has just joined a 13 week aviation school to hopefully become a Navy Pilot. His commander, Sargent Emil Foley (Louis Gosset Jr.) comes down hard on him because he sees a future great leader out of him. The academy is difficult and many don't make it, but Zack is determined. Zack and his friend Sid go out to a local bar and meet 2 girls. Both guys are warned that the local girls are just looking to marry aviators to get out of their factory jobs. The girl that Zach meets is named Paula (Debra Winger) and the two have a connection. When graduation nears, Zach stops calling Paula and she is upset. After graduation, Zack goes to the factory where Paula works, picks her up and takes her with him and the whole factory applauds for them. This 1982 movie is a great move and good love story.
