Very loose adaptation of the Stephen King horror novel about a writer and his family, snowbound in a huge hotel, who experience various hauntings caused by either the hotel itself or the writer's dementia. Technically stunning, and pretty dang scary, but too long, pretentious and implausible. Nicholson is excellent as the failed writer gone off the deep end.

I first saw this movie when I was really little, and it scared me so much! This family buys a hotel and lives in it. Many people have been murdered there and many believe that they never really left. As time goes by in this hotel, they start to notice strange things happening. Jack Nicholson plays the father and husband. His character really changes throughout the movie. He starts seeing things and seems to be going crazy. The ghosts of the murdered people show up when they least expect it and "redrum" is seen written all over the place and then disappears. When his wife starts to realize it is the hotel that is making her husband change for the worse, she tries to tell him but he then tries to kill her and their son. Can they make it out alive? This movie has some really gross and scary parts, but it is a really good movie!
