Coppola's award-winning adaptation of Mario Puzo's novel about a fictional Mafia family in the late 1940s. Revenge, envy, and parent-child conflict mix with the rituals of Italian mob life in America. Minutely detailed, with excellent performances by Pacino, Brando, and Caan as the violence-prone Sonny. Film debut of Coppola's daughter Sophia, the infant in the baptism scene, who returns in "Godfather III." The horrific horse scene is an instant chiller. Indisputably an instant piece of American culture. Followed by two sequels.

The Godfather

This is an excellent movie about a poor Italian family. The father, Don Vito Corleone starts doing favors for everyone and then becomes known as "the godfather". This becomes a family business and the eldest Sonny (James Caan) is supposed to take over someday but he has a bad temper. Michael (Al Pacino) comes home from the war and doesn't want to get into the family business, but once his father gets hurt, changes his mind. There are a lot of good fighting scenes, as even mafia people have a code of honor and if you don't obey, you have to pay for your mistakes. This is considered as one of the best movies of all time and it does an awesome job of taking you into their lives and characters.
