Having taught for over 20 years in a Film Study class at one of Madison, Wisconsin's most prestigious high schools, I can attest--- as can all of my students-- that this film is flawless in its adaptation of the Mansfield story in it, modernity set just after WWII, and in the Catskills. The war, the clash and inevitable reality of a range of social classes, the shallowness of the wealthy and a recently returned veteran brother of the 13 or 14 year girl, and a death in a family just "down the road" provide any adolescent-- girl or boy-- with insights into the process of growing up and being forced (sometimes with love, sometimes with rude intrusiveness) to grow into a young woman. Casting (three of the principle actors went on to greater fame in other films-- NETWORK, ANIMAL HOUSE, PENNIES FROM HEAVEN-- and several others, makes this a superb film. Art design, music, acting, script, and unequivocally realistic and true in the complexities of its themes.
