Amusing buddy/action comedy works because of the Rock's self-deprecating charm (and physical abilities) and Scott's insolent exuberance. Bounty hunter Beck (Johnson) takes one last job--that of retrieving the wastrel son of his boss. Travis (Scott) is an archeology student who's in the Amazon seeking a priceless golden artifact, which is also sought by his ex-girlfriend Marianna (Dawson), who wants to use the treasure to free her people from the inhuman working conditions imposed by manic mine owner Hatcher (Walken, who's obviously having a good time playing another crazy bad guy). The action (and there's lots of it) is briskly paced, and Hawaii's rain forests and the San Gabriel Mountains provide appropriate substitutes for the Amazon. Watch for the scene with the Rock and some amorous monkeys.

Dwayne Johnson, aka "The Rock," plays an amazing role as Beck, a professional bounty hunter. He is hired by his boss, Billy Walker, to go to get Walker's son, Travis, from the Amazon jungle. He heads to El Dorado, essentially owned by Hatcher, and people there have no choice but to work for him due to his monopoly of virtually all commerce. Travis is looking for an ancient golden artifact known as the Gato. If the townspeople acquired it, it would allow them to buy their freedom from Hatcher, which is why Hatcher wants the Gato and wants Travis free to find it for him. Beck captures Travis but Hatcher helps him escape. Travis and Beck run into the leader of the rebels, Mariana, a town clerk with whom Travis is infatuated with. Beck agrees for Travis to look for the Gato with his help and the rest of the rebels for Mariana. That night Hatcher and his men find the rebel camp and kill all the rebels save for Travis, Beck, and Mariana. Travis is eager to donate the artifact to a museum despite his greedy tendencies, but Mariana incapacitates Travis and Beck with a toxic, hallucinogenic fruit called Konlabos and takes it, unwilling to allow Travis to keep it. After hearing that Mariana was captured buy Hatcher, Beck and Travis decide to stay and free Mariana, through guns and all. In the end, Hatcher is killed and the people are all freed.
