Director Jay Russell does an admirable job adapting the beloved 1975 children's novel by Natalie Babbitt into a feature film. Winnie (Bledel) is chafing under the strict discipline of her parents, particularly the rule that forbids her from playing in the nearby woods. One day while sneaking into the forbidden forest, she meets Jesse, a boy from the rough and tumble Tuck clan. He tells her not to drink from a certain spring, but immediately after the warning she is abducted by Jesse's brother Miles (Bairstow). At the Tuck residence, Jesse's parents inform her that the spring is a fountain of youth and that she is not allowed to return home with that knowledge. She begins to fall for young Jesse although she discovers that he is actually 104 years old.
