Director Crowe goes existential in this puzzling, surreal thriller, a remake of Alejandro Amenabar's 1997 Spanish film, "Abre los Ojos." Cruise plays David Aames, a publishing magnate and playboy who's got it all except for real love. Just when he thinks he's found it in the form of aspiring dancer Sofia (Cruz, reprising her role from the original), a bitter ex-lover (Diaz) changes the game by inadvertently changing David's pretty face. Fairly straightforward allegory becomes science fiction, where David (and the audience) can't tell dream from reality. Thought-provoking, even deliberately confusing plot may frustrate some. But for those who like to sink their brains into a film, it'll will be rewarding, whether you like the explain-it-all ending or not. Decent acting, dreamy cinematography, and an engaging soundtrack will provide entertainment at the very least.

This movie is really good but kind of sad. David Aames inherits his father's company after both of his parents were killed in a car crash some years prior. He was always spoiled so he doesn't realize how fortunate he really is. David can never find his true love so he is a playboy. He meets Sofia, whome his friend brings to a lavish house party one night, and instantly falls in love with her. Desperate to find out more about Sofia, he gets chatting to her, unfortunately his ex-girlfriend Julie is watching David at all times and plans her final plot. Julie is in her car with David and crashes it. She dies and he needs his face reconstructed. David struggles to find out the truth when his dreams turn into reality, and what he thinks is reality, turns into nightmares. He knows what he wants but doesn't know how to get it and where to start, and Sofia is nowhere to be found.
