The American
Heavy-handed adaptation of Henry James's 1877 novel. Christopher Newman (Modine) makes a fortune in California and heads to Paris in the 1870s where he hopes to acquire both culture and a wife. He meets mysterious widow Claire de Cintre (Sullivan) but his proposal is rejected by her snobby aristocratic family, which is headed by Claire's imperious mother, Madame de Bellegarde (Rigg). Then Newman learns a family secret that could win him Claire's hand.

This movie was very loosely based on Henry James' novel. The plot did not follow the story at all, adding sexual relationships where there were none in the book. Many details in the book that were extremely important to the development of the plot and the main character, as well as to the overall theme of the story as written by James, were left out of the movie. If you are looking for a movie version of the book - this is not one.
