Empty-nester Pfeiffer wanders around a seemingly haunted house suspecting neighbors of murder and finding out more about her scientist husband's past than she'd like. Zemeckis shoots for Hitchcockian suspense but manages mostly intermittent jolts and occasional wit. The "surprise" ending, telegraphed by the film's marketing campaign, has nothing to do with the film's first hour, which has everything to do with atmosphere and setting up distractions.

Norman and Claire live together on a lake. Claire's daughter just left for college. Claire hears and sees strange things in their house and in the water and think the neighbors are up to something because she hadn't seen the wife in a while. When these strange things become real, Claire discovers something that her husband had been hiding from her. Norman seems to go a little crazy when it all comes out and chases Claire throughout a part in the movie. This is a really good thriller, especially to watch in the dark!
