Beautiful but bloodless Merchant/Ivory adaptation of Henry James' complex 1904 novel set in turn-of-the-century London. Wealthy American aesthete Adam Verver (Nolte) dotes on his only daughter, Maggie (Beckinsale), and even buys her a husband--an impoverished Italian aristocrat, Prince Amerigo (a miscast Northam), whom she loves. But, unknown to both Ververs, the prince and Maggie's best friend, the equally poor Charlotte (Thurman), had a long ago affair that gets rekindled, even though Charlotte has become the wife of Adam. A studied menage a quartre where just what anyone knows (or suspects) is never made clear.

Prince Amerigo is engaged to Maggie Verver, whose father, Adam, is a billionaire and they are very close. Amerigo sends his ex, Charlotte Stant, who attended school with Maggie, an invitation to the wedding, and she sees it as a chance to reunite their affair. Maggie has no idea of Charlotte and Amerigo's past, and think that they met when she came a few days before the wedding. Amerigo joins Charlotte to pick out a wedding gift. They come across this bowl mad of gold and solid crystal, which is flawless, that they set aside just incase she wants to buy it for them. Charlotte is introduced to Adam, and they end up getting married. Since Maggie and Adam are really close, Amerigo and Charlotte get jealous and spend some time together. They have an affair, and Maggie's aunt Fanny finds out but doesn't want to break Maggie's heart. Maggie eventually finds out and comes across the same bowl. She buys it, but it has a crack so the man delivers it to her house himself. He notices the pictures of Charlotte and Amerigo and tells Maggie that the two were going to buy it as a wedding gift. Maggie drops the bowl and it shatters but she keeps the pieces as a sign of adultry.
