Hanks first gained, and then lost, 40 pounds for his role as FedEx employee Chuck Noland, who gets marooned on a South Pacific island for four years. He does an excellent job of showing Chuck's desperation, isolation, and finally, resignation, and for a good chunk of the movie, does it without saying a single word (although later he does get to "talk" to a volleyball named Wilson). Zemeckis does his part with amazing visuals and a restrained approach to the score, which he uses sparingly.

Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt star in Cast Away. The movie came to theaters in the year 2000 and has a runtime of 143 minutes. Chuck Nolan (Hanks), a manager for Federal Express is a very busy man. He always likes to be on time with his shipments. Chuck gets sent into work on Christmas Eve and interrupts his dinner with his family and his girlfriend Kelly (Hunt). The two exchange gifts in the car and he gives Kelly a kiss and boards the plane. Sadly, the plane is flying overseas and gets caught in the storm. The pilots lose control and crash into the Pacific. Chuck survives and gets washed up on a remote island. He’s the only one on the island. Now he has to figure out a way to survive and make it back home. With the help of washed up Fed-Ex packages he learns to survive and make his life on the island. He’s stranded for four years and finally makes a raft. He’s spotted and is saved! He gets a wonderful welcome when he returned home. He found his girlfriend Kelly, but finds she is now married and has children. Chuck learned a lot while being stranded on the island. He learned life-changing lessons.

This show is really good and makes you see how lonely it would be on an island all by yourself. It starts out that Chuck (Tom Hanks) works for UPS and is always checking the time to make sure things are delivered and go as scheduled. However, because of a plane wreck, Chuck is now on an island all by himself with nothing but time on his hands. Chuck does get a best friend named Wilson which is really a volley ball. After fours years, Chuck does get off the island only to discover that life has changed a lot while he was gone. This movie is different than most because there isn't always a lot of talking since Chuck is all alone.
