Loose adaptation of the 1949 film has special effects wizard Rick Baker creating a very life-like model of the 15-foot, 2,000-lb. gorilla. With his elaborate features, including a pair of huge brown eyes, this Joe has more personality than his human allies Jill (Theron) and O'Hara (Paxton) who, in between saving Joe from evil South African poachers, spend most of the film giving each other the goo-goo eyes. Wholesome, harmless, lightweight (the movie, not the gorilla) family entertainment.

Jill (Charlize Theron) and a baby gorilla have something in common while growing up together and that is that both of their mothers were killed by poachers. Jill and Joe stayed together through the years and then the movie skips to when they are both grown up and now poachers have returned to try to capture Joe. Then a wildlife refuge worker Greg O'Hara (Bill Paxton) tries to convince Jill to move Joe to a new, safer place. Both Jill and Greg O'Hara eventually become friends but the hard part is trying to move Joe. At first they move him to a zoo and the poachers find him there, and then the poachers try to still him. Joe gets away and goes on a rampage through the town. This is a really good movie and keeps you hoping that Joe makes it to a safe place. The special effects are good and Joe looks like a real gorilla.
