Nerd (Wood), beauty queen (Brewster), jock (Hatosy), new girl (Harris), rebel (Hartnett), and lovelorn girl (DuVall) come up against the greatest challenge of their lives. No, not the SATs. Parasitic aliens have nested in their high school and replaced the rumpled, frumpy staff with pleasure-seeking sexpots out for excitment. It's "The Breakfast Club" against "Them" in a battle royale! More style, less substance dictates the union between indie director Rodriguez and screenwriter Williamson. As expected, the dialogue is hip, the fashions are crisp, and kids are spunky, but pic never explains the aliens' visit. The multi-generational cast is enjoyable enough and the scares (however recycled they may be) are effective if you like icky scenes of alien projectiles sprouting from a human orifice or two.

I saw this movie back when it came out and at the time I liked it. Zeke, Stan and his girlfriend Delilah, Stokely, Casey, and Marybeth are all friends in at Herrington High, Ohio, a small-town high school. The faculty and staff are taken over by alien parasites and in turn infect the students with the organism. The faculty sends the entire student body to the nurse, Rosa Harper (Salma Hayek) for ear inspections, where they are taken over by the parasite. Before this, however, Casey has figured out their plot when he and Delilah hid in the teacher's lounge closet when they first see the nurse attacked by Coach Willis and Mrs. Olson and then taken over by the parasite. Zeke finds out when he stabs Mr. Furlong in the eye with his pen filled with coke. The drug has a diuretic it in, and the aliens require excessive amounts of water to cope with life on Earth. At one point, the group of friends take the drug to keep safe from the parasite, and also to see who has the alien in them. The plan now is to get the queen, before the aliens can spread out over the whole country.
