Renegade FBI agent Art Jeffries (Willis) must protect an autistic child who has inadvertently cracked a secret government code. Together, they dodge bullets from evil government forces headed by Nicholas Kudrow (Baldwin), who insist on having the innocent boy killed rather than change the code. That glaring logic aside, Willis does more than grunt here, showing moments of tenderness as he bonds with the oprhaned boy in between nailing bad guys and amassing an assortment of cuts and bruises. Baldwin is effective as the snake who truly believes killing a child will benefit national security. When action time isn't being sacrificed for Jeffries' paternal aspirations, film rises slightly above tepid to provide substantial thrills.

This movie is good but not great. MERCURY is what the NSA believes to be an unbreakable code that they developed. They ran a test to see if anyone can decipher the code by putting it in a puzzle magazine. Simon Lynch, an autistic boy who has an affinity for puzzles, sees it and realizes what it is, and calls the NSA. Kudrow, the boss, is worried what might happen if this gets out orders that Simon be terminated. The man he sends kills his parents but is unable to find Simon and leaves when the police arrive. Art Jeffries was sent by the FBI. Art finds Simon, who was hiding and takes him to the hospital. The assassin takes another try but Art saves Simon and they go on the run.
