The biggest of the new wave of disaster flicks paying tribute to the Irwin Allen celebrity-fests of the '70s finds an alien armada descending on Earth to create some fireworks on the July 4th weekend. The fate of the world rests in the hands of an unlikely band of Earthlings led by President Whitmore (Pullman), a computer expert (Goldblum), and a Marine fighter pilot (Smith). Special effects, despite forgoing some of the more expensive newer technology, don't disappoint. Strong (if not A-list) cast and plenty of action. Devlin and Emmerich wrote the script while promoting "Stargate," after a reporter asked Emmerich if he believed in aliens.

This is a good movie with a lot of action. On July 2 the US Military learns that meteors are entering the Earth's atmosphere and will collide with Earth. They realize that they are wrong and that the meteor is a spacecraft full of aliens. When the spacecrafts arrived they started invading all the major cities and were set up in a sequence to destroy each city at the same time. The Aliens used all of Earth's communication systems to communicate with one another. The survivor's on Earth devise a way to fight back and they all head to Area 51, which is a government testing sight, where a small alien fighter space ship was being held captive. Will Smith is a marine fighter and Jeff Goldblum is a computer expert and they have taken control to try and save the Earth. On July 4, Earth finally regains control back from the Aliens and they have their Independence back. The chemistry among the actors is very good and the show is exciting.
