Bond is back, in the long-awaited (eight years) debut of Brosnan as legendary Brit agent 007. Since we're through the Cold War, Bond has to make do with the villainy of the Russian Mafia, who are planning to sabotage global financial markets utilizing the "Goldeneye" satellite weapon. There's a spectacularly impossible stunt to start things out in familiar territory and lots more noisy (if prolonged) action pieces. Brosnan (who looks great in a tux) is slyly self-aware that his character is more myth than man and Janssen does a suitably over-the-top job as bad Bond girl Xenia Onatopp. Tina Turner sings the dreary title track.

WARNING: REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS – WE RECOMMEND TO WATCH MOVIE FIRST COOL STUFF: - Flying into the falling plane: ridiculous, but such fun to watch! - Bungee-jump off the dam: real world record stunt - Car chase: Bond drives DB5 again and races with Ferrari - All girls are hot - Henchwoman instead of henchman: it’s been 10 years since “May Day” - “M” is a woman too now, and the one who cares - “Friend-turned-enemy” villain gives a new suspense - Tank demolishing St. Petersburg: spectacular - CIA agent driving a tiny soviet “Zaporozhets” (ZAZ): picking on both sides - “Golden Eye” idea: thanks god it’s not laser again! - Fight on the huge satellite dish: action on a grand scale - Nice gadgets: laser-watch, Batman-belt, bomb-pen - Exotic views: Monte-Carlo, Cuba, Alps (as Siberia) NOT COOL: - Secret base hidden under the lake: an idea used in YOLT - No sex with a bad girl (only foreplay in sauna) - There is a BMW Z3 loaded with tricks, but no show-off VERDICT: The recipe is a good old mix revived by more complex main characters whose “friend or duty” dilemmas give more suspense. In his 1st movie Brosnan shows a great potential and gives the right combination of style, toughness and humor. Some of his moves still need polishing, but good story and great action compensate for that.
