Teacher in London's tough East End tosses books in the wastebasket and proceeds to teach his class about life. Skillful and warm performance by Poitier as idealistic teacher; supporting cast also performs nicely. Based on the novel by E.R. Braithwaite. LuLu's title song was a big hit in 1967-68.

This movie, which was produced in 1967, is about a black teacher named Mark Thackeray and is played by Sidney Poitier. He is having a rough time with his senior class of juvenile delinquents who aren't interested in learning. Mark really wanted a job as an engineer but couldn't find work so he took the teaching job at East End London High School until the job he really wanted comes along. The movie shows how bad the kids are and how he slowly takes control over the class room and how he starts to interact with the kids, and in the end on graduation day, the kids finally appreciate him and are sad about moving on. This movie shows a good lesson that you can succeed with anything that you keep working at. This is a really good movie and Poitier is an excellent actor.
