Early directorial effort by Spielberg from the Peter Benchley potboiler. A tight, very scary, and sometimes hilarious film about the struggle to kill a giant great white shark that is terrorizing an eastern beach community's waters. The characterizations by Dreyfuss, Scheider, and Shaw are much more enduring than the shock effects. Memorable score. Sequelled by "Jaws 2" in 1978, "Jaws 3" in 1983, and "Jaws: The Revenge" in 1987. Look for Benchley as a TV reporter.

I remember when I was little, my family and I were about to go to Florida and we watched this movie. When we went swimming in the ocean, my sister and I were afraid that Jaws was going to swim up and get us. My mom had to explain to us that we would be fine just swimming in the shallow water. Even though this movie kind of scared me when I was little, I still liked watching it. Now when I watch it, I realize how fake some of the scenes look because it's an older movie. Although, I did watch Shark Week and find out some facts about shark attacks. Now when I go in the ocean, I'm a little less scared, and I know not to watch shark related movies or tv shows right when I'm about to go on vacation near an ocean.
