Sentimental story about a 12-year-old runaway (Richter) who befriends a whale. Should appeal to children for its heartwarming story and delightful sea acrobatics. An electronically operated stand-in whale was used for far-off shots; a domesticated performing whale named Keiko for the close-ups. Director Wincer was known to grumble about the temperamental Keiko during shooting. Suggested viewing for students of animal behavior. Proof that family films can make money, "Free Willy" placed tenth for total boxoffice receipts in 1993.

This movie was made in 1993 and is about a foster boy named Jessie who recently moves in with his new foster parents named Glen and Annie. Jessie doesn't feel like he fits in to much and gets into some trouble because he sprays graffiti in a local theme park and as his punishment he is forced to clean it all up. While there everyday cleaning he watches Willy, a whale that recently moved into the aquatic park and isn't happy because he was taken away from his family in the ocean from some local fishermen. Willie and Jessie make a connection and Willy starts to respond to Jessie. Jessie learns that the park owner doesn't like Willy and is unhappy that Willy isn't performing properly, and since he has a one million dollar insurance policy on Willy, decides that Willy is worth more dead than alive. Jessie is upset from hearing the news and with the help of some friends, decides to sneak Willy out in the middle of the night and get him back to his family in the ocean. All this has made Jessie become more resonsible, and Jessie's stepparents find out but decide to help him in the end. This is a great family movie and Willy is a real killer whale named Keiko. The theme song is sang by Michael Jackson and became a top ten hit. Hoping that Willy makes it safely back home will keep you on the edge of your seat!
