Northwest volcano serves up a smorgasbord of molten disaster in the second most desirable town in the U.S.--the titular Dante's Peak. Brosnan is the intuitive scientist who comes to Washington to match wits with the conical adversary and joins forces with the town's tres femme mayor Wando (Hamilton). Ashes fall like snow in January, computer generated lava flows profusely, poisonous gases leak out and water turns to acid, all with desired nail-biting effect. Wando's two kids, dog and grandma lend folksy charm and the requisite loved-ones-in-grave-danger, but this heated disaster flick is not exactly for the whole family. Cliched and predictable, flick runs the Disaster Movie Playbook page by page as plot takes a backseat to nonstop action.

I first saw this movie in school and I actually like it. Harry Dalton, a USGS scientist, is sent to the small town of Dante's Peak to check on unusual activity. Dalton urges Mayor Rachel Wando to put the city on alert. Dalton's boss, Paul Dreyfus, comes to town and won't put the town in alert because he needs proof. Harry notices tress, animals and even people had died recently near the volcano. The volcano was not overly active for a week, but then the activity began to increase just as the town finally went into alert. The city panics and tries to leave town causing a huge traffic jam. Harry and Rachel, the town's mayor, go up the mountain to try to rescue her two kids and ex-mother-in-law. They have a rough time getting back down the mountain and getting to safety. The whole town runs into problems and even some deaths.
