An old story takes a fresh approach as a successful but stuffy business man hires a fun-loving, energetic young hooker to be his companion for a week. The film caused some controversy over its upbeat portrayal of prostitution, but its popularity at the boxoffice catapulted Roberts to stardom.

Julia Roberts plays a prostitute named Vivian. Edward, a very successful lawyer, picks her up and pays her to stay at his hotel and be by his side when he needs her. He pays her a good amount of money and sends her shopping to get some appropriate clothes. When Edward sees her, she has fully changed and is amazed with what he sees. They end up falling for each other, but Vivian doesn't want to admit it and won't accept his fairy tale ending until he goes up the fire exit to her apartment with a rose.
