Bogart is outstanding as Dixon Steele, a hard-drinking and volatile Hollywood screenwriter, who becomes the prime suspect in the murder of a hat-check girl, last seen alive leaving his apartment. New neighbor Laurel Gray (Grahame) alibis the guy because she doesn't think he's a killer and he's grateful. Enough so to begin a romance with the cool beauty. But the investigating detectives still have the writer on their A-list and his paranoia kicks in. Dix begins to question Laurel's loyalty and violently over-reacts to his suspicions. Offbeat, yet superb film noir, expertly directed by Ray. Based on the novel by Dorothy B. Hughes. Ray's disintegrating marriage to Grahame seemingly played out onscreen; they split after filming.
